The Dominican Republic might not be for you if you like everything to work like clockwork, but if you can relax you will experience a rich culture and a people who are resilient, generous and friendly. Dominicans have a great capacity for optimism and go by the idea that ‘I want it to be so, ergo it is so.’ Dominicans might not want to tell you things you don’t want to hear and people have a hard time saying ‘no’ or ‘I don’t know,’ instead they will tell you what they want to be true.

The Dominican Republic is the only Caribbean island with desert landscapes as well as tropical forests, wetlands and mangroves. Travel to the coast for virgin white sands, hills of coconut palms and traditional villages of pastel-coloured wooden houses.

The capital Santo Domingo isn’t the archetypal quaint, somniferous Caribbean capital. This noisy, vibrant, sprawling metropolis of gleaming steel structures contrasts with the slum areas of Santo Domingo North. The southwest of Dominican Republic is not an obvious destination choice but as the secret of its natural, relatively untouched land spreads it has become popular with nature lovers and eco-tourists. The Bahía de Las Águilas National Park contains some of the most attractive wild landscapes in the country.

Culture Smart! Dominican Republic is a concise guide to understanding the Dominican people, with illuminating insights into their national identity. Familiarise yourself with their customs, traditions and culture and experience Dominican Republic authentically.
