The Colombian people have been shaped by their landscape and by their complex history. Colombia’s wild geography has historically made communication and travel between regions difficult, which forced people to be self-reliant and independent. The rugged topography made some regions hard to access, meaning they were difficult to govern, giving rise to lawlessness.

Some Colombians believe that when a person dies their spirit returns to their house before it moves to the next dimension. The spirits get very thirsty and need water to help them pass smoothly into the spirit world. When someone dies, glasses of water are placed all over the house so that the spirit can drink its fill before moving on.

Culture Smart! Colombia is a concise guide to understanding the Colombian people, with illuminating insights into their national identity. Familiarise yourself with their customs, traditions and culture and experience Colombia authentically.
