Bolivia is slightly greater in size than the state of Texas, yet its population density is amongst the lowest in the world.

There is an Andean tradition of reciprocity which gives rise to the concept of ayni (mutual support and cooperation, in Quechua). This is put into practice with the system of collective work known as minka, through which local people will help a neighbour with some particularly labour-intensive task.

People in the countryside enjoy greeting strangers with a symbolic interchange of gifts; they may offer food or drink before asking for money. This should not be viewed as trickery, cash is as hard to come by in the countryside as provisions can be for the visitor, and is ayni.

Culture Smart! Bolivia is a concise guide to understanding the Bolivian people, illuminating the complexities of their collective personality. Familiarise yourself with their customs, traditions and culture and experience Bolivia authentically.
